12.21: “Come, Let Us Adore Him”
Saturday, December 21
“And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.”
Luke 2:9 *
The very night that the shepherds were watching their flocks by night, imagine what other situations they might have encountered. Consider this “Advent” reflection by St. John of the Cross.
Advent
If you want, the Virgin will come walking down the road
pregnant with the Holy, and say,
“I need shelter for the night, please take me inside your heart,
my time is so close.”
Then, under the roof of your soul,
you will witness the sublime intimacy,
the divine, the Christ, taking birth forever,
as she grasps your hand for help,
for each of us is the midwife of God, each of us.
Yes, there, under the dome of your being,
does creation come into existence eternally,
through your womb, dear pilgrim—the sacred womb of your soul,
as God grasps our arms for help:
or each of us is His beloved servant never far.
If you want, the Virgin will come walking down the street,
pregnant with Light, and sing!
Prayer:
Creator God, thank you for sending Jesus to earth as a human, to teach us how to live and love. This Advent season, come to the manger of our hearts. May we remember always that “each of us is the midwife of God, each of us”. Dwell with us in the sacred wombs of our souls. Amen.
