12.29: “Come, Let Us Adore Him”
Sunday, December 29
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither– whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1: 1-3
Contemplating Psalm 1 seems like a perfect way to prepare ourselves spiritually for a brand-new year. I’m guessing it’s no mistake that this passage is at the very beginning of the Book of Psalms, in that it encourages believers to focus on the basics: turning from sin, being grounded in God’s Word, and living fruitful lives.
Psalm 1:1-3 begins and ends with references to God’s best gifts: the joy of being in right relationship with Him (“blessed”), and the experience of His blessing on words and deeds that stem from that relationship (“prosperity”). But being right with God necessitates ignoring worldly messages and temptations, as well as avoiding close ties with those who embrace sinful habits and/or disrespect or deny God. In order to do this, we MUST be rooted and grounded in the Word! Perhaps the dawning of 2025 is a fresh chance to rededicate ourselves to this goal as we thank and praise our Lord for calling us with His upward call.
Prayer:
“But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3: 13b-14
