Like a Rock

 

 

Bob Seger and Chevrolet made “Like a Rock” famous, and synonymous with durability and never failing reliability.  

 

 

 

Seger sings a lament for times gone by, but I feel there is wisdom in his third verse:

“My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock”

 

“…And I held firmly to what I felt was right, like a rock.”

 

Our guidance is to follow the good and forsake the evil.  We know, whether or not we agree, we know what is right and what is evil.  Our God is likened to a rock, in many passages in the Bible, for instance: 

1 Samuel 2, 2, NIV:

“There is no one holy like the Lord;
    there is no one besides you;
    there is no Rock like our God.’

 

As we worship our God, likely the best way is by imitation, by trying to be more God-like, by trying to emulate the qualities of the rock, solid, steadfast, unfailing.  

 

1 Peter 2: 20, NIV:

“But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.”

 

“But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.”  “Like a Rock…”
