Powerful Prayer

“So, we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of His will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.”  Colossians 1:9

The Apostle Paul gives us a beautiful picture of the church as the Body of Christ and emphasizes the importance of each part of the body fulfilling it’s assigned purpose. Our structure of ministry teams, committees and mission groups encourages everyone within the church community to use their gifts to further God’s kingdom. As Presbyterians we delight in organization and structure. Every task is carefully described with an appropriate time frame and budget. But how carefully do we bathe each activity in prayer? Are we quick to move forward with our own ideas and plans, or do we first spend precious time asking God’s Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance? As our Pastor Nominating Committee works to find the person God will choose to lead our church going forward, we are learning how important it is to know that our church family is praying for us and for the search process.  Often we feel overwhelmed and uncertain, but when we bring our concerns to the God who knows the plan for the future of this church, the fog clears and we can move forward with clarity. Our prayer as a church is not an optional activity – nice to do if we can find the time. Rather, prayer is absolutely essential if our energy and God’s energy are to flow together. Prayer is powerful and opens the way for our desires and needs to align with God’s good and perfect will.  

Prayer:  Thank you God for calling your people to prayer. Help us to be faithful in giving ourselves to you each day so that we may be blessed with the assurance of being at the center of your will. Amen.
