The Joys of Summer
“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-22
From my earliest days, I’ve always loved summer. As a teacher, with the freedoms June through August offered, this feeling was only magnified. Just hearing the word “summer” led my mind to sweet memories and an audible “ahhh”. Even now, during the seemingly interminably long months of our Michigan winters, I find myself longing for the lazy, hazy days of summer.
The warmth of the sun on my face. Walking outside without the need for a jacket. Opportunities to gather with friends and family for picnics. Buttery corn on the cob. Fresh fruits of all kinds. Strawberry shortcake. The delightful sounds of children splashing in the lake. It’s all heaven to me. Even when the weather turns hot and humid, I quickly think of the brutal cold of January and my thoughts of grumbling cease.
I thank God for his gift of seasons. Each one offers its beauty and delight. While I will squeeze every last bit of the fun and recreation that summer offers, I know that at the end of it I will be presented with the beauty of autumn. And in that, I will also rejoice.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the gift of seasons. We are grateful for the beauty and opportunities that each season offers us. Help us to be mindful; open our eyes to the many delights that you have created for us in each season. Remind us of our responsibility to be grateful stewards of your creation. Amen
