The Shining Light
“I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
Revelation 22:16b
Hanging in our sanctuary is a banner depicting the prophecy of a shoot from the stump of Jesse, David’s father. Jesus was born of this royal line and is the “Anointed One” who would come and bestow the gift of eternal life to all believers.
From childhood, we learned the appearance of a star was the catalyst that sent the Wise Men on their journey. Ever the teacher, Jesus knew the stars were a tool that guided farmers, shepherds, mariners and travelers. People looked to the stars as points of reference to inform their daily decisions.
In calling Himself the bright morning star, Jesus wants us to understand that He is our point of reference. We are to turn to Him to seek guidance and comfort. When, on a daily basis, we need help deciding what to do, where to go, how to respond, Jesus is the unique point of reference. He is our help and our guide. In times of darkness when challenges weigh heavily upon us, if we follow Jesus, He will bring us out into the light.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, You are the Bright Morning Star. You are the light shining in the darkness. You bring us the promise of a new day and new beginnings. You are our refuge and our hope. We thank You for Your loving care.
Amen
