Our Story

In 1883, the Lansing Presbytery authorized the formation of First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Michigan. From its beginning, First Presbyterian Church has sought to be more than a place where people gather for worship. We have sought to be a community of disciples—worshiping God, growing in faith, serving our neighbors, and sharing the love and grace of Jesus Christ with Battle Creek and beyond.

The congregation began with 87 members and soon established a home at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and McCamly Street. A chapel was built in 1884, and the church called its first resident minister. By 1910, membership had grown to more than 700 people. As the congregation grew, so did its opportunities for worship, discipleship, fellowship, and service. On Thanksgiving Day in 1927, the cornerstone of our present church was laid, and one year later the congregation gathered there for worship for the first time.
Throughout its history, First Presbyterian Church has understood that the ministry entrusted to us extends beyond our own congregation. Between 1958 and 1983, First Presbyterian helped establish Pennfield Presbyterian Church and Westlake Presbyterian Church, extending Presbyterian witness and ministry into other parts of the Battle Creek community. During this period, the congregation also established the First Presbyterian Church Preschool and built the Retreat Center on Waubascon Road, creating additional opportunities to nurture children, strengthen families, deepen faith, and build Christian community.
As First Presbyterian celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1983, the congregation continued looking toward the people God was calling us to serve. An elevator, barrier-free accommodations, and a refurbished kitchen made our facilities more accessible and better equipped for ministry. These improvements reflected an important conviction that continues to shape our life together: our building is not simply a place for us—it is a resource God has entrusted to us for ministry.
That conviction has led First Presbyterian into numerous ministries of compassion and service. Hospital visitation, participation in the Franklin Food Pantry, and involvement with the Soup Kitchen of Battle Creek provided opportunities for members to carry the love of Christ beyond Sunday worship and into the lives of our neighbors.

Our commitment to young people took another important step in 1996 with the addition of the Youth Center across the street from the church. More than additional space, the Youth Center represented an investment in future generations—a place where middle and high school students could find belonging, build relationships, experience Christian community, and explore and deepen their faith.
Renovations to the sanctuary in 2014 renewed our worship space in a manner consistent with our biblical and theological heritage while increasing its flexibility, usability, and safety. The sanctuary has also become a gift we are able to share with the wider community. Through partnerships with local musical organizations and schools, our worship space has welcomed neighbors from throughout Battle Creek. Kellogg Community College choral ensembles, Lakeview High School choirs and a variety of other musical ensembles are among the many groups that have helped fill this sacred space with music and bring our congregation and community together.

In 2012, when First Presbyterian embarked upon the Campaign for Renewal, the congregation intentionally made mission an important part of that effort. We wanted renewal to mean more than improvements to our property. We wanted it to strengthen our ability to participate in what God was already doing in Battle Creek.
Our focus was local and relational: supporting work that strengthens families, nurtures children, encourages healthy relationships, advances education, and promotes spiritual growth. We also wanted our members to have opportunities to serve personally rather than simply provide financial assistance. Partnerships with Early Childhood Connections, Charitable Union, and CityLinc Ministries grew from that commitment. Through financial support, hands-on service, shared facilities, and collaboration with ministries already present at First Presbyterian, we sought to strengthen the work being done throughout our community.

Across generations, the forms of ministry have changed, but the calling has remained the same. God has placed First Presbyterian Church in the heart of Battle Creek not simply to occupy a corner, but to serve a community. Our history is ultimately not the story of buildings constructed, renovations completed, or programs established. It is the story of generations of disciples seeking to worship Christ faithfully, welcome their neighbors, care for those in need, nurture children and young people, strengthen families, and share God's love and grace with all people.

We are grateful for those who came before us and for the foundation their faithfulness has provided. Yet we believe the best way to honor that history is not simply to preserve it, but to continue it. As God brings new generations, new neighbors, and new opportunities to our doorstep, First Presbyterian Church remains committed to following where the Spirit leads—making disciples, building relationships, serving our community, and faithfully participating in God's work in the Heart of the City.
